SHELTER
week 2 | march 29 - april 5
SHELTER
The prompt “shelter” brought out every meaning of the word expressed through every possible medium. This week we sheltered separately in our homes to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Also this week we sheltered together as a Cross-family as we learned new ways of worshipping and communing together in the Lord, our true refuge and strength. In this week’s installment of the creativity project you’ll find a new Dr. Suess book, sculptures, nature forts, an interactive adventure story, St. Patrick’s Breastplate, alligators, a Paul Simon cover and so. much. more. Please enjoy and be encouraged.
Only Living Boy in New York
Adam Murray
Original song written by Paul Simon
Tom, get your plane right on time
I know your part'll go fine
Fly down to Mexico
Do-n-do-d-do-n-do and here I am,
The only living boy in New York
I get the news I need on the weather report
I can gather all the news I need on the weather report
Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile
Do-n-doh-d-doh-n-doh and here I am
The only living boy in New York
Half of the time we're gone
But we don't know where,
And we don't know where
Half of the time we're gone
But we don't know where,
And we don't know where…

I arise today with strength of heaven,
Light of sun and depth of love
I arise today, Gods might to hold me
His Spirit guiding the road before me
Christ above me, Christ beneath me,
Christ behind, and Christ before
Christ beside me, Christ within me
Christ to comfort and to restore

In order to be sheltered there is a choice involved to hold still. Even here at home we can find ourselves “going” many different places. May this song invite us all to receive shelter here in the present of this moment.
I painted this while working at a camp up north this summer. This was the path I walked many times a day, up and down from the cabins. The shelter of the trees were comforting and familiar, yet the ever changing light allowed me to see their beauty anew every day.
Spring inside, adorned with forsythia in bloom (from a neighbor), carnations from Andrea Pope’s Trader Joe’s run, Ivy that I’ve kept alive for 2 years (!), a piano that is filling our space with children’s playful practice
BCP, and “Hymns of God” - a wedding gift from our beloved high school sacred choral director.
Shelter — From Isaiah 40
Cindy Schmickle
(From this favorite chapter, the Lord gave me some timely reminders.)
In the hollow of a Holy hand…
enclosed
protected
here I stand
or, moreso, rest
in the One who sits
above the earth…
who names the stars
and gives them birth.
The Everlasting,
Omnipotent …
who sees,
gives strength,
abides in His celestial tent.
This Shepherd
draws me to Himself,
with tender care …
secure and safe,
His own will ne’er be left bereft.* (*deprived, lacking, lonely or abandoned)
Sarabande
Corrie Bascom - violin
This piece was composed by Kenji Bunch. It is a bit of an abstract piece, but its grounded chords and echoing melodies remind me of a cleft in a rock - a classic image of shelter. The Sarabande has a bit of a bleak sound overall, but its mood shifts from a mournful beginning to an uplifting, quiet, and content conclusion.
*Bonus trivia for string players: For this piece, I tuned my highest string (which is normally an E) down a full step to a D. This allows for a more echoey, meditative sound.
Give Me Rest
Seth Hedman
Give me rest, Give me peace.
O this wandering soul is looking for a home.
Won't you be my home God?
Give us rest, Give us peace.
O these wandering souls are looking for a home.
Won't you be our home God?
